Building a Family Tree in the Digital Age
A family tree is a record of who is related to whom, and how — kept so that the answer outlives the person who knows it. The post's argument for bothering is that family knowledge disappears quickly and quietly: children often do not know their great-grandparents' names, and the connections between branches fade within a generation or two of nobody writing them down. It cites a 2010 Emory University study finding that knowledge of family narrative was the single best predictor of emotional health and happiness in children. Paper trees do this badly. They are hard to update. Easy to lose. Impossible to share.
Why Family Trees Matter
In an increasingly mobile world, family connections can feel fragmented. Children may not know their great-grandparents' names, and extended family relationships can fade over generations. A family tree preserves your heritage and gives future generations a sense of identity and belonging.
Research shows that children who know their family history have higher self-esteem and a stronger sense of control over their lives. A 2010 Emory University study found that knowledge of family narrative was the single best predictor of emotional health and happiness in children.
Going Digital
Traditional family trees on paper have obvious limitations. They are hard to update, easy to lose, and difficult to share. A digital family tree solves these problems:
- Easy updates when new family members arrive
- Photo attachments to put faces to names
- Relationship mapping that shows connections clearly
- Sharing with family members across the globe
- Backup and preservation so nothing is lost
Using LifeWell's Family Tree Feature
LifeWell's family tree visualization makes building your tree intuitive:
- Start with yourself and add your immediate family (parents, siblings, spouse, children)
- Expand outward to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins
- Add details like birth dates, locations, and photos
- View the visual tree to see how everyone connects
- Link family members to your People contacts for easy communication
Tips for Gathering Family Information
- Interview older relatives while you can. Record conversations on your phone
- Scan old photographs and attach them to family members in the app
- Check public records for birth, marriage, and census data
- Ask about family stories and traditions, not just names and dates
- Host a family reunion or video call specifically for tree building
Connecting Generations
Your family tree becomes a living document. When a baby is born, add them. When a couple marries, update relationships. When someone passes, their memory is preserved in the tree alongside their photo and story.
LifeWell's People feature integrates with the family tree, so you can quickly access contact information, birthdays, and notes about each family member.
Start Today
You do not need to complete the entire tree in one sitting. Start with what you know and build from there. Even a partial family tree is more valuable than none at all.

What people use it for
Building outward from yourself
`/people/family-tree` draws the tree, with a switch between Family and Work — the same graph with the generations relabelled. Start with the people you can name without thinking and add a generation at a time; the shape of what is missing becomes obvious once the part you know is drawn.
Scanning the photographs while somebody can still name them
LifeWell holds no picture on a person. The tree draws initials, and an import drops the photographs that come with it. The post's advice to scan old prints is still the half of this job with a deadline attached, because prints in a box degrade and the person who can identify who is in them will not always be there. That is the deadline.
Keeping the tree and the address book as one thing
Family members link to your `/people` contacts, so the person in the tree and the person whose birthday is next week are the same record rather than two.
Recording the branch as it changes
A birth, a marriage, a death. The post describes the tree as a living document rather than a project with an end, and that is the honest version: it is never finished, and it does not have to be.
Grouping the family you actually deal with
`/people/family-groups` holds the working sets — a household, one side of a family — which is a different question from the genealogical structure and worth keeping separately.
Questions
How do I start a family tree if I do not know much?
Start with yourself and add the people you can name without effort — parents, siblings, partner, children — then work outward as you learn more. The post is explicit that you do not need to finish in one sitting, and that a partial tree is worth more than none. Half a tree also makes it obvious which questions to ask, and who is left to ask them.
What should I ask older relatives?
Stories and traditions rather than only names and dates, the post says, and it suggests recording the conversation on your phone while you have it. It also suggests scanning old photographs, checking public records for births, marriages and census entries, and using a family gathering or a video call as an occasion for the whole exercise.
Can I record someone I am not certain about?
Yes, and it is better than leaving them out. A name with a question mark beside it in a note is a thread somebody can follow later; an omission is invisible and looks like an answer. LifeWell keeps what you type exactly as you type it and does not check any of it against anything, so an uncertain entry stays uncertain until you say otherwise.
Does the tree share itself with my family automatically?
No. Nothing in your record is shared with another person unless you choose to share it, and sharing is something you set up deliberately rather than a default. What you can see and what a relative can see are separate questions, and the privacy page sets out how each is decided.
What happens to the tree if I stop using LifeWell?
You can export everything, and you can delete everything yourself from inside the app. A family record is precisely the kind of thing that should not be locked inside one product, which is why the export exists and why attachments can sit in your own Google Drive rather than ours.
Is a family tree only useful for genealogy?
The post frames it more practically than that. Blood groups, allergies, who is related to whom, which relative saw which doctor and when — in most families all of that lives in one person's memory. The tree is where it stops being one person's job to remember.
Why does knowing your family history matter?
A 2010 Emory University study, which the post cites, found that knowledge of family narrative was the single best predictor of emotional health and happiness in children. Its plainer argument is the one you can check for yourself: names, relationships and the stories attached to them fade within a generation or two of nobody writing them down, and the people who could confirm them are the first to go.
